Coronavirus Impacts Cyber Chain

With social distancing and lockdowns in place, many people have turned to going online in order to stay connected for many different reasons, including socializing to ordering supplies. But with this increased attention to the cyber world, many issues come up especially as a result.

Among the many issues facing people now:

  1. Misinformation and Censorship: One of the issues with how fast the virus is spreading is that censorship in key spots have slowed down how much information is passed along to the outside world. This combined with internet misinformation has allowed conspiracy theories to spread online.
  2. Cyber Encryption: With everyone online, security online is vital. There may have been hackers that have claimed they won’t attack medical facilities, but everyone else is fair game. Cyber security becomes important to protect your data online.
  3. Smart Tech Lifelines: The virus also exposes the promise and risks of the “internet of things,” the globe-spanning web of always-on, always-connected cameras, thermostats, alarm systems and other physical objects. Smart thermometers, blood pressure monitors and other medical devices are increasingly connected to the web. This makes it easier for people with pre-existing conditions to manage their health at home, rather than having to seek treatment in a medical facility where they are at much greater risk of exposure to the disease.
  4. Supply Chain in potential jeopardy: With China’s capacity not coming back anytime soon, supplies are at a limit. This can be compounded by the fact that many distributors are as vulnerable to cyber-attacks as other smaller companies.

This is a time to make sure all your cyber protocols are in place. A good cyber policy will take care of basic needs in case a hacker shuts down your business in this chaotic time.
